Isla Holbox : All You Need To Know

Isla Holbox, known for its scenic beaches, calm waters and laid back vibes, is one of our must-travel destinations post-lockdown.

Getting There

Located just north of the Yucatan peninsula on Mexico’s south-eastern coast, and just a car ride from Cancun Airport to the ferry of Chiquila, this idyllic island boasts a wealth of activities and things to do. Pay less than £10 for the 25-minute ferry ride across to the island for a greeting-by-golf-cart upon arrival, ready to transfer you to the property of your choice – totally worth it!

But where to stay? Well, that’s easy (if you ask us!)

For the best beachfront location on the island, friendly and attentive service and cloud-like beds, we know a fantastic family-run boutique hotel on the island, only a 3-minute walk from the main square and a 5minute ride from the ferry terminal. Casa Las Tortugas. Indulge in barefoot luxury at this must-stay spot on the island.

Tip: Try to plan your trip around the new moon so you can experience the monthly new moon ceremony on the beach !

Arrival Experience

Expect a welcome experience that will leave you feeling as though you have returned home, with a gift bag and some mystery seashells… we won’t ruin the surprise, but the team at casa Las Tortugas do a great job of making you feel instantly at home.

You will have a selection of locally produced, eco-friendly amenities in the room to enjoy. Of the hotel’s 24 individually decorated rooms which are set around a courtyard, you will have views of the beach, pool and/or yoga studio depending on your room allocation. The hotel restaurant (&bar) stretches out on to the beach, which becomes a beautiful spot by night when lit up by candles, lanterns and fairy lights. By day, spend your day swinging on the beach hammocks and chaises-lounges, ordering delicious fish tacos with the most glorious guacamole and the freshest fruit smoothies to ever touch your lips. Make sure to stick around for the sunset, cocktail in hand..

Dining
Breakfast is included and served at Mandarina, offering fresh juice and hot drinks, a basket of homemade pastries with butter and homemade jam (the pineapple one was delicious), one plate of fresh fruit with yoghurt and homemade granola or the breakfast of the day. The perfect way to start your day.
The rest of the day, Mandarina offers a full-day fusion of Mediterranean, South American and Caribbean delights. You literally don’t need to leave the beach!

AMA is the rooftop restaurant, serving sushi and cocktails. What more do you need in life?! A view? Not a problem from this spot, trust us.

Across the road you will find LUUMA which offers a selection of tapas and cocktails in a patio-setting. Very popular spot on the island so don’t miss out!

What to do?

Casa Las Tortugas is located very close to the main square of Holbox – only a 3-minute walk! With no cars on the island, you have the option to explore by foot, rent a bike or jump in a taxied golf buggy to get around. The square gets quite busy at night

At night, there are plenty of things going on throughout the islands wildly understated bars and restaurants, mixed with street foods for a full culinary experience. A great spot for cocktails on the beach is Salma. The staff will not only welcome you but share a wealth of knowledge on different daily excursions you must experience based on your preferences. Expect all the local tips on whale shark excursions, bioluminescence and kite-surfing adventures.

Spa

The hotel also has a spa, with massage rooms and yoga/meditation classes, in addition to a swimming pool which is often deserted leaving you with a feeling as if it’s just you and the pool. Serenity.

Discover the hidden world of Langkawi

Sure we all know about the adventure to find in Thailand, the long beaches and crystal clear waters. But how about south of their border – ever been to Malaysia?! If you have, hopefully you didn’t miss the hidden gem of their land… the Jewel of Kedah – Langkawi.

Located just off the mainland of Malaysia accessible by a short 40 minute flight from Kuala Lumpur, Langkawi is an archipelago made up of 99 small islands surrounded by The Andaman Sea. This has become a popular tourist destination over the years, yet not victim to that of the tourism industry often seen with this industry trend. So what can you expect from travelling to Langkawi? 1. Island Hopping This is an absolute MUST-DO when visiting Langkawi. You will be taken on an adventure like never before… by Jet-Ski!! Yes, it’s true. And trust us – you don’t want to miss this experience. Riding the waves at whatever speed you’re comfortable with, you will be taken around many hidden areas of these majestic islands otherwise inaccessible. As a region, Langkawi is pretty safe so this makes for a great evening with your loved ones or if you’re travelling solo. 4. Paradise 101 Opened only a few years back, Paradise 101 is the ultimate day out. Located just off the coast of the main island of Langkawi, you will be picked up by boat transfer and transported just a short ride away to this paradise island. Suitable for all ages, here yourselves zip-lining through the trees, jumping off the aqua park and lazing around on their beach. You can also do jet-skiing and parasailing from here in addition to sunset cruises. How about a game of volleyball or a spot of lunch? Be sure to catch the sunset in their shisha lounge too! 5. The Lake of the Pregnant Maiden Wow. We don’t want to spoil the surprise so we won’t say too much on this one. Just make sure you pay a visit to this Lake – especially if you’re hoping to get pregnant anytime soon! Legend has it that drinking the water from the lake can make one pregnant! (*disclaimer* we don’t advise drinking from the lake!). Watch out for the monkeys that will be after your water bottles too. There are some really cute baby monkeys hanging around – don’t forget your camera on this one! 6. Cable Car See over the Andaman Sea and the Jewel of Kedah via cable car. This is a must! Ah The Maldives. We’ve only been there… 11 times! So you know you can trust us when thinking Maldives for your next vacation. An island nation of 26 atolls stretching across the Indian Ocean, the country is made up of 1192 islands with only 0.33% of it being dry land.

Having an overwhelming percentage of ocean within their nation, you can only imagine what life under the sea is like in this luxury destination. The Maldives is a world-renowned prime diving location and for those of you who aren’t looking to gain your diving license, snorkelling is also a fantastic option. Some may argue that it is even better than diving in The Maldives. Home to around 5% of the total reef population on the planet, in addition to thousands of species of fish joined by majestic manta rays and whale sharks, you definitely don’t want to forget your underwater camera this time around. Trust us.

Only 200 of the country’s islands are inhabited and at the time of writing, there are 132 resorts across these paradise. So why do we chose W Maldives as our number 1 destination? Read on to find out…

In our opinion, W Maldives has by far the best house reef in The Maldives. Just pick up your snorkel equipment and flippers from Down Under (the resorts Dive Centre) and snorkel right from your back door. To give you the best chance of getting to all the beaches and enjoying them at your leisure, you’re going to need to rent a car. We recommend 108 Estate – a local car rental service owned by a friendly giant named Dion.
