australasia & the south pacific
It’s a long way to go, so we like to make every day count. That usually means fewer places, more time in each, and a proper rest at the end.
Australia is best thought of as several countries: Sydney and the coast, the Red Centre, the Great Barrier Reef and the wine regions of the south. New Zealand fits mountains, fjords, vineyards and lakes into two very drivable islands.
The South Pacific is where you slow right down. French Polynesia is the most glamorous, Fiji the friendliest and easiest with children, and the Cook Islands, Samoa, Tonga and Vanuatu feel wonderfully unspoilt.
A stopover on the way, in Singapore, Hong Kong or the US, breaks up the journey and makes the jet lag far easier.

We’d suggest at least two weeks for Australia or New Zealand alone, and closer to three if you’d like to combine them or add a South Pacific island. It’s a long way, so the extra days are worth it.
Spring and autumn, roughly September to November and March to May, suit most of Australia and New Zealand. The tropical north and the Pacific islands are best in the drier months from May to October.
A stopover helps enormously. Two nights in Singapore, Hong Kong or Los Angeles, and a gentle first few days on arrival, make a real difference.
Yes, the flight between Sydney and Auckland takes around three hours. Many people then add a week in Fiji or French Polynesia on the way home.
French Polynesia is the classic, with overwater villas in Bora Bora and the privacy of The Brando. Fiji and the Cook Islands are more relaxed and just as beautiful.
