mozambique
Mozambique has one of the longest coastlines in Africa, and its islands are some of the loveliest places to finish a safari. The Bazaruto Archipelago is a protected marine park of sand dunes, seagrass and coral reefs, with dugongs, turtles and manta rays offshore.
Days are spent diving, snorkelling, sailing on a dhow or simply on the beach. In the south, Inhambane and Tofo are known for whale sharks, and humpback whales pass from July to October.
It’s a short hop from Johannesburg, so it pairs well with Kruger, the Sabi Sands or Cape Town.
where to go
Part of the Bazaruto marine park, with dunes, lagoons and a handful of lodges.
The largest island in the archipelago, with towering dunes and empty beaches.
The gateway to the islands, with a relaxed coastal town and dhow harbour.
Historic Portuguese town and a beach known for whale sharks and manta rays.
A remarkable conservation story, with wildlife returning to forest and floodplain.
Colonial architecture, markets and some of the best seafood on the coast.
when to go
The coast is warm all year. The drier winter months are the most comfortable.
May to November
Sunny, dry and pleasant, with calm seas. Humpback whales pass from July to October.
December to April
Hot and humid with rain. Cyclones are possible from January to March, so we plan carefully.
October to March
The best months for whale sharks off Tofo, with warm, clear water for diving.
